Two tips to follow when choosing a manual lawnmower

Posted on

If you have seen a few manual lawnmowers for sale that you think might be suitable for the landscaping work you like to do, here are some tips to follow when deciding which of these lawnmowers you should buy.

Check the weight of the lawnmower before buying it

When you're shopping for a petrol or electrically powered lawnmower, you don't necessarily need to pay attention to its weight (unless you'll regularly need to lift and transport it to different locations). However, if you want a manual lawnmower, you must check the weight and ensure that the weight of the one you buy is light enough, given your strength levels.

The reason for this is that manual mowers don't have motors that push them along and so the speed with which it travels across a lawn is dependent solely on how easily the person operating it can push it forward. If you pick a hefty manual lawnmower and you're not very strong, and you then have to, for example, mow a grassy area with some steep slopes, you'll have a hard time pushing the mower up these slopes without exhausting yourself. Furthermore, you might find that due to its weight, it pulls you down at a dangerously fast pace when you travel down any grassy gradients, to the point where you are at risk of toppling forward.

By checking the weight of any manual mower you're considering buying and ensuring that it's a weight you would feel comfortable handling, you should find mowing any lawn areas that are not level safer and simpler.

Look for lawnmowers with cushioned handles

When shopping for your manual lawnmower, you should look for one for sale that comes with a cushioned handle. The reason for this is that, in order to push this type of lawnmower, you will need to apply more pressure to the handle of it than you would to one that was powered by fuel or electricity. If your landscaping activities will involve extended periods of lawnmowing and your manual mower doesn't have a cushioned handle, you might find that pressing your hands into the handle for long periods results in welts, an aching sensation and eventually, lots of calluses.

Whilst you could simply wear thick gardening gloves whilst using this mower, you might find it uncomfortable to do this when you're doing landscaping jobs on hot days, as your hands might become very sweat and hot when encased in the thick fabric. By opting for a manual mower with a cushioned handle, you can protect your hands and still keep them cool when lawnmowing for lengthy periods on hot days.
